The purpose of SMART is to monitor the in vitro susceptibility of clinical bacterial isolates to antimicrobials in intra-abdominal infections worldwide. This Web site is intended for health care professionals outside of the US only.

SMART monitors longitudinal susceptibility patterns (based on bacterial population MICs) among target organisms in the regions of Asia/Pacific (A/P), Latin America (LA), Middle East/Africa (ME/A), North America (NA), and Europe (EU).

SMART provides important information about changes in the spectrum of microbial pathogens and trends in the antimicrobial resistance patterns in nosocomial and community-acquired intra-abdominal infections. Continued monitoring of antimicrobial resistance patterns in hospitals is essential to guide effective empiric therapy.
